Data on the average age of civil servants across the Civil Service are set out in the following table. The average age has increased from just under 45 in 2010 to over 46 in 2013. The increase is, in part, due to the necessary restrictions on recruitment introduced in 2009 as part of the response to the economic and fiscal crisis. Workforce Planning, being carried out across the Civil Service, was introduced to provide Departments and Offices with a framework for analysing their current workforce, including age demographics, and defining their future workforce requirements relative to their strategy, budget and business planning process.
