Questions (429)

Michael Lowry

Question:

429. Deputy Michael Lowry asked the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources if he will assist in securing information from RTE on the percentage of re-runs shown in the period from January through to March of 2014, in view of the fact that a high number of television licences are being paid through the Department of Social Protection; and if he will make a statement on the matter. RTÉ is an independent national public service broadcaster whose remit and obligations are set out in Section 114 of the Broadcasting Act 2009. Section 98 provides that the company shall be independent in the pursuance of these objects, subject to the requirements of the Act. As such, I, as Minister, have no function in the management of RTÉ’s day to day affairs, including in relation to programming matters. However, I have referred the matter to the company for direct reply to the Deputy.
