Question:

74. Deputy Bernard J. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Skills the extent to which he has received submissions from the authorities of schools (details supplied) in County Kildare seeking provision of a gaelcholáiste in this area, which was previously served by Coláiste Life, Lucan but which school is now unable to meet the increased demand from north Kildare; if he is prepared to provide approval in principle for a new gaelcholáiste in north Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I propose to take Questions Nos. 73 and 74 together.

My Department has no record of the submissions to which the Deputy refers. However, the Deputy will be aware that a new post-primary school is opening in the north Kildare area in September 2014 and this new school will have an all-Irish Aonad. This will supplement all-Irish post primary provision in the area. My Department has confirmed that if sufficient demand for education through the medium of Irish in the Aonad is demonstrated over a four year cycle, consideration will be given to the establishment of an independent Gaelcholáiste.
