Questions (757)

Eoghan Murphy

Question:

757. Deputy Eoghan Murphy asked the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport the involvement he has in the introduction of the new bus rapid transit between Blanchardstown and UCD; his views that the new BRT should be introduced in a way that makes the operation of the service compatible with pedestrian and cyclist safety in order that it does not have a negative impact on residents living in the city centre, particularly in the city’s historic Georgian quarter; and if he will consider the merits of a policy (details supplied). As Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport I have responsibility for policy and overall funding in relation to public transport.  The National Transport Authority (NTA) has statutory responsibility for developing public transport infrastructure in the Greater Dublin Area (GDA) including Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) projects.

The NTA's Integrated Implementation Plan 2013-2018 has identified that Bus Rapid Transit  schemes could play a significant role in the improvement of public transport in the Dublin region and has accordingly proposed three BRT schemes for Dublin, one of which is the Blanchardstown to UCD corridor.

The NTA has advised that work on the identification of  a preferred route corridor is ongoing in consultation with relevant bodies including the local authorities.

In the light of the NTA's responsibility in this matter, I have referred the Deputy's question and attachments to the NTA for consideration and direct reply.  Please advise my private office if you don't receive a reply within 10 working days.
