Questions (353)

Dessie Ellis

Question:

353. Deputy Dessie Ellis asked the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government if he will provide a breakdown of the social housing waiting lists across the State on the basis of applicant family size; and the numbers of beds required for their appropriate housing. [30374/14]

View answer

Written answers

The results of the statutory Summary of Social Housing Assessments carried out as at 7 May 2013 provided details on the number of households on waiting lists in each housing authority area, including data on the composition of qualified households. The results are available on my Department's website at the following link:

http://www.environ.ie/en/Publications/DevelopmentandHousing/Housing/FileDownLoad,34857,en.pdf. The 2013 figures are the most up-to-date figures available on waiting list numbers, which are subject to on-going fluctuation due to households being allocated housing and new households applying for housing support.

It is a matter for individual housing authorities to decide on the size of dwellings to be allocated to applicants on their waiting lists. This policy is decided in their Allocation Schemes, the making of which is a reserved function of the housing authority.

Special Adviser appointments were undertaken in accordance with the Instructions on Ministerial Appointments for the 31st Dáil and the Guidelines on Staffing of Ministerial Offices of March 2011. The Guidelines provide for Special Advisers to be placed on the Principal Officer (standard) scale in line with the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform Circulars on the matter. If the salaries of my Special Advisers and those of my colleague Minister of State O'Sullivan were capped at the first point of the Principal Officer Scale, the gross annual savings would amount to €35,758 per annum.

In addition to the professional services referred to above, my Department also engages the services of civilian medical practitioners to provide primary care for the Permanent Defence Force when medical officers are not available or where specialist medical expertise is required. In the period 1 June 2013 to 31 May 2014, my Department has paid €2.9m to some 527 civilian medical service providers. A 20% reduction would give rise to annual savings of €152,663 on non medical professional services and €580,593 on medical professional services.
