141. Deputy Thomas P. Broughan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine if he is conducting any studies on the ongoing slaughtering of horses for meat exports, given the great suffering involved for these companion animals, and the dangers to human health from this practice; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Slaughter of horses for human consumption is subject to compliance with relevant EU regulations, which are designed to ensure inter alia that food is safe, to protect human health and to safeguard animal welfare at time of slaughter.
