Questions (584)

Brian Stanley

Question:

584. Deputy Brian Stanley asked the Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment the reason the provision of bulk liquefied petroleum gas, LPG, remains the sole energy utility not under scrutiny of the Commission for Energy Regulation; and if he has satisfied himself that with only two providers servicing the bulk LPG market, adequate competition exists in the supply of this utility. The supply and retail price of LPG is not a matter in which I, as Minister, have any role or function.

Liquid Petroleum Gas, or LPG, is a by-product of oil. The Irish oil industry is fully privatised, liberalised and deregulated and there is no price control on petroleum products in Ireland. The Deputy will be aware that the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has specific responsibilities for protecting the rights of consumers.

Responsibility for the regulation of the natural gas market is a matter for the Commission for Energy Regulation (CER), which is an independent statutory body.
