Deputy Catherine Murphy asked the Minister for Justice and Equality the compensation payments made by the Irish Prison Service to prison officers, other prison staff and members of the public in 2016 and 2017, by year, amount paid and the general nature of claim made for the payment, in tabular form; and if he will make a statement on the matter. View answerI am advised by the Irish Prison Service that the majority of compensation cases are managed by the State Claims Agency and Criminal Injuries Compensation Tribunal respectively and are independent of the Irish Prison Service. Where compensation is awarded it is subsequently paid from the Prison Service vote.
The tables show the total amount paid in each category of claim to Prison Service Staff and to members of the public for the years 2016 & 2017.
