139. Deputy Micheál Martin asked the Minister for Justice and Equality the training his Department and agencies under its aegis will receive on GDPR legislation; when it will be completed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29851/18]
View answerI want to advise the Deputy that a mandatory GDPR E-learning course was rolled out to all staff in my Department, as well as a number of agencies under my aegis, in early May 2018. The course, tailored to the needs of the Department, provided a comprehensive overview of the legislation as well as outlining the critical role staff have in protecting personal data. Approximately 90% of staff have successfully completed the training to date. A number of staff in the Data Protection Support and Compliance Office have also undertaken more specialist training in this area. I have asked agencies under my Department's aegis who operate their own data protection policy arrangements to reply directly to the Deputy on the matter.
I note also that the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform have issued a request for tenders in relation to the award of a contract for the provision of services to deliver customised training for Data Protection Officers within the civil service and bodies across the public sector. I understand that the submitted tenders have been assessed and the winning tenderer will be notified shortly.
