Centralisation of surgical oncology is based on clear evidence that patients who are operated on by surgeons who carry out higher volumes of surgery in specialist centres, which themselves have high volumes, achieve better outcomes. I recently approved detailed proposals prepared by the HSE's National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) for the further centralisation of surgical oncology.

Implementation of the proposals is now being progressed by the NCCP, working with the Hospital Groups.
