1806. Deputy Stephen Donnelly asked the Minister for Health when it is planned to negotiate a new consultant contract. [34086/19]
View answerCurrently most consultants hold contracts that allow them engage in on-site private practice, with a smaller proportion holding contracts that also allow them engage in off-site private practice. The Sláintecare Report proposed the phased elimination of private care from the public system. Given the complexities involved, it also proposed an independent impact analysis of the proposal.
Engagement with the consultants representative bodies in relation to a new contract would follow on from the Government's consideration of the Report of the Independent Review Group established to examine private activity in public hospitals (the De Buitléir Report) pursuant to the Sláintecare recommendation. I intend to publish this Report in the coming weeks. Consideration of the Report is ongoing and the Government has not yet made any decision relating to the recommendations in the Report.
