Since I reintroduced the Local Improvement Scheme (LIS) in September 2017, I have allocated over €48 million to Local Authorities for improvement works on non-public roads in rural areas.

Over 2,000 roads have benefited from this funding, which has led to improved access for landowners and residents along the roads in question.

It is clear that there is a continuing demand for LIS funding in rural communities across Ireland. However, the level of funding available for the scheme in any year is determined as part of the annual Estimates process. I will consider the situation regarding funding for LIS roads in 2020 as part of the forthcoming Estimates process, having regard to the overall level of funding which may be available to my Department for next year.
