Deputy Neale Richmond asked the Minister for Transport if he has considered extending the extension period for driver licences through the summer to ensure that those with licences due to expire soon who reside outside the State who cannot renew online do not have to return to Ireland to renew their licence; and if he will make a statement on the matter. View answerA further extension to driving licences is currently being considered. If approved, this extension will only apply to those driving licence that will expiry for the first time between the relevant dates. Licences that have already been extended will not be extended further.
A person must be resident in Ireland to apply for or renew a driving licence.
A holder of an Irish licence who is resident in another EU member state can continue to drive on their Irish licence as EU driving licences are mutually recognised. Once the Irish licence expires, the licence must be exchanged for a licence issued by the member state in which the person resides.
An Irish driving licence can be renewed in Ireland up to 10 years after the expiry date of the licence.
