Under the General Medical Services (GMS) scheme, the HSE contracts GPs to provide medical services without charge to medical card and GP visit card holders. As of October, 2,540 GPs hold a GMS contract.

Most GPs also hold contracts with the HSE to provide services under other schemes, such as the Primary Childhood Immunisation Programme, National Cancer Screening Service and Methadone Treatment Scheme etc. There are a further 524 GPs without GMS contracts who hold other such contracts, bringing the total number of GPs contracted by the HSE as of October to 3,064.
