As the Deputy will be aware, the Garda Commissioner is responsible under Section 26 of the Garda Síochána Act 2005 (as amended) for the management and administration of Garda business, which includes operational decisions relating to road traffic matters.

I am advised by the Garda Authorities that placement of vans is not done on a county by county basis but rather the company (Go Safe) is contracted to provide a minimum of 7,500 hours of monitoring and surveying per month across 1,496 speed sites in 836 zones nationwide.

The designation of specific sections of road as speed enforcement zones is based on an analysis of collision data nationally, which informs decisions around the deployment of Go Safe vans.

Following the selection of a speed enforcement zone the outsourced safety camera operator, GoSafe, liaises with local members of An Garda Síochána in order to identify suitable sites to operate from.

Speed enforcement zones are continually reviewed to ensure enforcement activity is targeted and prioritised at the locations where collisions are occurring, with some zones being removed and others being added. Work is ongoing to increase the number of sites by more than 200 nationally before the end of 2022.

Further information on speed safety cameras can be found on the Garda website at the following link: www.garda.ie/en/roads-policing/safety-cameras/.
