Questions (1417)

Michael Lowry

Question:

1417. Deputy Michael Lowry asked the Minister for Justice the reason that the use of the swimming pool at the Templemore Garda training college has been withdrawn from members of the community in Templemore despite the fact that this has been the practice for many years and has helped to foster good relations between the community and the Garda College; and if she will make a statement on the matter. The Garda Commissioner is responsible for the effective and efficient use of the resources available to An Garda Síochána, including the Garda College and its facilities and I, as Minister, have no role in the matter.

I am however advised that the swimming pool remained closed during the Covid-19 pandemic but that in March 2022, a number of schools in the vicinity of Templemore were granted permission to use the pool.  This permitted use ceased during the summer holiday period. However, I understand that it is expected to recommence at the start of the Autumn school term.  I am further advised that the use of the swimming pool at the Garda College is granted by the OPW under licence to, and for the benefit of, the local community on a non-profit basis.
