About the Oireachtas

Ireland: a parliamentary democracy

Ireland is a parliamentary democracy. The National Parliament (Oireachtas) consists of the President and two Houses: Dáil Éireann (House of Representatives) and Seanad Éireann (the Senate) whose functions and powers derive from the Constitution of Ireland enacted by the people on 1 July 1937. The Houses of the Oireachtas are situated at Leinster House, Dublin.

Centenary of the First Dáil

Centenary of the First Dáil

On 21 January 1919, the First Dáil held its first public sitting. Throughout 2019 we commemorated this important centenary with events, a dedicated website and an exhibition in Leinster House telling the story of 100 years of Dáil Éireann.

The January 1919 edition of Irish Fun depicted Father Christmas delivering the gift of independence, following Sinn Féin's landslide victory in the general election the previous month.

Did you know?

Seanad Éireann was abolished in 1936 only to be re-established in 1938 under the Constitution of Ireland.

It is undoubtedly deeply distasteful to the public that for election to a seat in the Upper House of our Parliament the entire electorate consisted of a mere 227 votes. Talk of rotten boroughs. This is something that would have disgraced the most corrupt politics of 18th century Ireland.
