Oireachtas Library displays one of its oldest books in Leinster House

17 May 2019, 11.27

Front page of Holinshed Chronicles of England, Scotland and Ireland, second edition

The Oireachtas Library is displaying Holinshed’s Chronicles of England, Scotland and Ireland, one of the oldest books in its collection.

The Library’s copy is the second edition, published in 1587, and was originally part of the library of the Chief Secretary at Dublin Castle. The 1587 edition is particularly famous because it was used by William Shakespeare as a source for more than one third of his plays, including Macbeth, King Lear and the history plays.
