The Oireachtas Library is displaying the 1926 Report of the Committee on Evil Literature to mark Bloomsday, the annual celebration of James Joyce’s Ulysses, this month.
Joyce’s novel caused uproar when it was first published. Deemed obscene by many, the book was banned in the United States and Britain, and hundreds of copies were burned. Although it was never formally banned in Ireland it was prevented from being imported, which ensured censorship of its content for decades.
