10 Jun 2020, 16.44

Cartoon of Susan O'Donnell, 1883, and a poster commemorating the execution of Patrick O'Donnell

This month the Oireachtas Library is exhibiting a piece from its collection of political cartoons from the late 19th century. The cartoon relates to the shooting of James Carey.

The Library has over 600 digitised cartoons from the nationalist newspapers Weekly Freeman, Weekly News and United Ireland that were held in the library of the chief secretary’s office in Dublin Castle. The cartoon on display shows Susan O’Donnell, the "wife" of Patrick O’Donnell, a Fenian sympathiser who shot dead the police informer James Carey in 1883.
