The first in a new series of Environmental Indicators has been published by the Oireachtas Library & Research Service (L&RS).

The quarterly infographics provide accessible, up-to-date and robust data and indicators on Ireland’s progress towards the environmental targets and commitments set out in the Programme for Government. The series will provide a window on the latest published data to provide a comprehensive profile of each quarter across nine themes.

The first issue of Environmental Indicators details the percentage of electric vehicles as a share of new private cars, Ireland's overall fuel mix for electricity generation, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for Ireland since 1990 by sector and more on agriculture, carbon tax, water and biodiversity.

The series is accompanied by a data visualisation presentation that shows the data and trends in greater detail.

The nine themes covered in the series are:

  • Transport
  • Energy
  • Waste
  • Air quality
  • Greenhouse gas emissions
  • Agriculture
  • Carbon pricing
  • Water
  • Biodiversity

The indicators have been largely selected on the basis of policy relevance based on current political priorities as well as existing targets that have been set. These include those put forward under the EU’s Green Deal and the UN’s Sustainable Development goals as well as national policy commitments.
