Irish Language Committee publishes report on General Scheme of Official Languages (Amendment) Bill 2017

19 Jun 2018, 13:53

The Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands today, Tuesday, 19 June 2018 published its draft report on the General Scheme and Draft Heads of the Official Languages (Amendment) Bill 2017.

Chairperson of the Committee, Catherine Connolly TD, said that while the Joint Committee welcomes the positive provisions in the Draft Heads, it is concerned that, given the current crisis facing the Irish language and the Gaeltacht community, the Heads do not contain specific provisions to implement specific strategies to tackle this crisis immediately.

Deputy Connolly said: “The immediate implementation of pro-active interventions is needed and these need to be achieved within identified timescales. These interventions and timescales need to be clearly outlined in the new Act.

The provisions relating to recruitment to the Public Service and the standard of service to be provided are the most important provisions and these need to be strengthened greatly if the aims of the proposed Act are to be achieved.”

In its report, the Committee has outlined its proposals in regard to these and the other relevant issues.
