Agriculture Committee to Commence Examination into Redevelopment of Sugar Industry

10 Jan 2011, 16:25

How the Irish sugar beet industry could be reinvigorated and how it came to cease production will be analysed by the Oireachtas Agriculture Committee over the coming weeks.

The Committee will hold a series of meetings, starting tomorrow, (11th) with the Secretary General of the Department of Agriculture, Tom Moran, which will investigate ways of restarting the industry and consider why production ended.

Tomorrow’s meeting will take place at 2pm in Committee Room 1 of Leinster House. Next week, the Committee will hear from the Chief Executive of Greencore on the topic.

The sugar production plant in Mallow, Co Cork was closed in 2006 with the loss of over 200 jobs.

Committee Chairman, Johnny Brady TD said;
“The closure of the sugar beet plant in Mallow was the end of an era for the industry in Ireland. Regrettably, the shutting of the factory meant the loss of hundreds of jobs. The purpose of tomorrow’s meeting and the further meetings on the subject is to consider if there is any way to revitalise the industry or discover alternative opportunities for the business.”
