Finance Committee to consider National Lottery outages

10 Mar 2015, 14:39

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform will tomorrow consider the operations and functioning of the National Lottery. Recent technological faults in the system will be raised.

10 March 2014

The meeting will be divided into two sessions. Representatives from RGDATA and Convenience and Newsagents Stores Association (CSNA) will be appearing at 2:30 pm and will be followed at 3:45 pm by representatives from the operator, Premier Lotteries Ireland (PLI), and the National Lottery Regulator.

Committee Chairman, Liam Twomey TD says: “The National Lottery is a popular national institution which also makes an important contribution to social projects nationwide. Consequently, the reputational damage it has suffered as a result of recent technological faults is of concern to the Committee. The Committee will wish to ascertain from PLI the underlying reasons for the recent outages in the system, and the steps being taken to resolve these issues. In particularly, we will be seeking reassurances that they are merely teething problems, rather than a more fundamental flaw in the new system.

“The first session tomorrow afternoon will allow the Committee assess the extent of the unease with the new system among retailer representatives. Members will also gain from the insights of the National Lottery Regulator, a recently established position, to monitor and enforce compliance by the operator. Along with the input of PLI representatives, these diverse perspectives will afford the Committee the fullest sense of how best to chart a pathway forward on resolving these issues.”

This meeting takes place at 2:30 pm this afternoon Wednesday 11 March in Committee Room 4, LH 2000.
