13 July 2016

The Select Committee on Health will tomorrow meet with the Minister of State for Communities and the National Drugs Strategy, Catherine Byrne TD, to consider Committee Stage of the Misuse of Drugs (Amendment) Bill 2016.

The meeting will commence at 9.30 am in Committee Room 2 tomorrow, Thursday, 14 July 2016.

Committee Chairman, Dr. Michael Harty TD, said “This is an extremely important piece of legislation which amends the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977. It has the effect of expanding the number of controlled substances and aims to prevent the misuse of certain dangerous or harmful drugs. These drugs are a mixture of prescription medicines and illicit drugs which may also be known as new psychoactive substances (NPS).”

“As a Committee, we recognise that this legislation goes beyond the health aspect and will help law enforcement authorities deal more effectively with the illicit trade in certain substances through this increased control.”

“We also warmly welcome the initial opportunity to meet with Minister Byrne and engage with her on the detail of this proposed legislation.”

Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
