Committee on Housing, Planning & Local Government to meet Minister to discuss Action Plan for Housing and Homelessness

13 Sep 2016, 15:54

The Government’s Action Plan for Housing and Homelessness will be on the agenda of the Joint Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government when it meets with Minister Simon Coveney tomorrow, Wednesday 14th September 2016.

Committee Chairman Maria Bailey said: “The Government’s Rebuilding Ireland - Action Plan for Housing and Homelessness has pledged to deliver 47,000 social houses in six years. The plan also says 25,000 homes a year will be built here by 2020. The project encompasses five pillars - to address homelessness; accelerate social housing; build more homes; improve the rental sector and utilise existing housing. Tomorrow, the Committee will have its first formal opportunity to consider the plan in detail with the Minister for Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government Simon Coveney. Members are acutely aware that a lack of housing is impacting on the homelessness crisis leaving many people unable to afford rents, having to live in temporary or emergency accommodation or forced to sleep rough. Therefore we will be keen to explore the proposals outlined in the plan with the Minister and examine how he sees the plan addressing the problem in the short, medium and long term.”

This meeting will take place in Committee Room 4, Leinster House at 2.30pm tomorrow, Wednesday, 14th September 2015.

Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
