20 September 2016

The Joint Committee on Health will tomorrow meet with Mr. John Farrelly, CEO of the Charities Regulatory Authority, to discuss the regulation and oversight of Section 39 Agencies. Section 39 of the Health Act 2004 provides for agencies which deliver similar, or additional, services to that of the HSE and who receive State funding in order to carry out this duty.

The meeting will commence at 2.00pm in Committee Room 1 tomorrow, Wednesday, 21 September 2016.

Committee Chairman, Dr. Michael Harty TD, said “Section 39 agencies carry out an extremely important function in the delivery of health services in Ireland. As a Committee we now welcome the opportunity to engage with Mr. Farrelly to discuss, in particular, the new powers afforded to his office and how they will improve the regulation and oversight of these bodies.”

“Recent high profile cases in this sector have emphasised the need for better regulation of how public funds are used, once allocated. This opportune meeting will allow Members to hear from Mr. Farrelly on how the Charities Regulatory Authority can now proactively protect the charities sector, through better regulation and oversight.”
