Health Committee to meet with Minister Simon Harris

28 September 2016

The Joint Committee on Health will tomorrow meet with the Minister for Health, Simon Harris TD, to discuss the Drugs Pricing Agreement, the Emergency Department Task Force, the Winter Initiative and the wider issue of hospital waiting lists.

The Committee will also conduct a mid-year review of the 2016 Estimates for Public Services - Vote 38 (Health) and discuss the Proposals for Expenditure in 2017.

The meeting will commence at 9.00am in Committee Room 4 tomorrow, Thursday, 29 September 2016.

Committee Chairman, Dr. Michael Harty TD, said “Our first meeting with Minister Harris and his officials, as a Joint Committee, allows us to hold a constructive and practical meeting which will discuss a range of issues that are fundamental to our own work programme. Certainty around drug pricing is pivotal to those that need it, and so the recently negotiated deal with the Irish Pharmaceutical Healthcare Association (IPHA), and the capacity for further savings, will be of particular interest to the Committee. The Committee will also receive an update on the progress being made by the Emergency Department Taskforce on how ED overcrowding is being managed.”

“Winter time traditionally sees the resources of the health service come under increased pressure and so we look forward to this timely update from Minister Harris on the Winter Initiative and how this will be deployed in the context of existing hospital waiting lists.”
