18 October 2016

The Joint Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport will tomorrow continue their deliberations on a vision for public transport, including the level of State subvention. The Committee will meet with representatives of the National Bus & Railworkers’ Union (NBRU) and SIPTU as well as Mr. Michael Taft (Research Officer, UNITE) and UCD Professor, Aisling Reynolds-Feighan.

The meeting will commence at 9.00 am in Committee Room 3 tomorrow, Wednesday, 19 October 2016.

Committee Chairman, Brendan Griffin TD, said “The Committee have already heard from Minister Ross and representatives of the NTA, Dublin Bus, Iarnród Éireann and Bus Éireann on a vision for public transport. Tomorrow we will turn our attention to the representative unions and also hear from the Professor of Transport Economics in UCD, Ms. Aisling Reynolds-Feighan.”

“Any vision for public transport must include the views of the workers themselves and be based on strong economic principles. This meeting will allows us to, not only hear how change impacts on the members of the representative bodies, but also how growth can be built in a sustainable way and the role that State subvention will play in this growth.”

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
