The Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence will tomorrow meet with the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Charlie Flanagan TD, to receive an update on matters arising at Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) meetings, including the most recent meeting held in Luxembourg.

The meeting will commence at 9.30am in the chamber of Dáil Éireann tomorrow, Thursday, 20 October 2016.

Committee Chairman, Brendan Smith TD, said “The EU Foreign Affairs Council, the body responsible for the EU’s external action, meets regularly to discuss areas such as foreign policy, defence and security, trade, development cooperation and humanitarian aid. We now look forward to hearing from Minister Flanagan on the outcomes of the most recent FAC meeting, held in Luxembourg this week.”

“The agenda for the meeting put forward areas such as the current situation in Syria, the resulting migrant crisis and also the EU global strategy and so we welcome this opportunity to be briefed by Minister Flanagan on what decisions were reached. The current crisis in Syria calls for a continuation of the humanitarian diplomatic effort and we welcome this opportunity to engage with Minister Flanagan on the coordinated response at EU level.”
