16 November 2016

The Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence will tomorrow meet with H.E. Mr. Maxim Alexandrovich Peshkov, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Ireland, to discuss the situation in Syria and Ukraine and other matters of mutual interest.

The meeting will commence at 10.00am in Committee Room 1 tomorrow, Thursday, 17 November 2016.

Committee Chairman, Brendan Smith TD, said “We welcome this opportunity to meet with Ambassador Peshkov. The current situation in Syria is one which is having a devastating and wide reaching humanitarian consequence, including the mass migration of people that we are seeing across Europe and beyond. Members look forward to putting their concerns directly to Ambassador Peshkov and hearing more about the current Russian position. Any escalation in military action is to be strongly condemned and a resolution must be found.”

“The current political position in Ukraine and the Crimean Peninsula is also one which Members will look to discuss further with Ambassador Peshkov. Stability in the region is vital and human rights must at all times be protected - this can only be achieved through dialogue and agreement between all parties involved, so we welcome the opportunity to hear a timely update from the Ambassador.”

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
