EU Commissioner to brief Finance Committee on Apple tax ruling

30 Jan 2017, 12:30

EU State Aid Rules and the investigation into preferential tax ruling involving Apple Inc. will be on the agenda when the Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach meets tomorrow, Tuesday, 31 January at 12.30pm in Committee Room 4.

30 January 2017

Ms Margrethe Vestager, EU Commissioner for Competition, will appear before the Committee.

Committee Chairman, John McGuinness TD, said, “Our Committee welcomes the opportunity to engage with Commissioner Vestager tomorrow to discuss the rationale behind the Commission’s August ruling which  may have serious implications for the Irish Tax Code in terms of future determinations by the Revenue Commissioners. In its decision, the European Commission ruled that Ireland had inconsistently applied tax rules to multinationals.”

“Resulting from the decision, the Irish Government must now seek to recoup €13 billion from Apple Inc.  Apple Inc. employs thousands of people in Ireland and this ruling could have far-reaching implications for multinationals in this country. We welcome the presence of Commissioner Vestager tomorrow, as the Committee embarks on a series of meetings on this highly significant issue.”

Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

The meeting will be broadcast live on Oireachtas TV:
