1 February 2017

The Joint Committee on Health will tomorrow meet to consider General Practitioner issues in a properly functioning Primary Care service. The Committee will hear from representatives from the Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP), the Irish Medical Organisation (IMO) and the National Association of General Practitioners (NAGP).

The meeting will commence at 9.00am in Committee Room 4 tomorrow, Thursday, 2 February 2017.

Committee Chairman, Dr. Michael Harty TD, said “In order for a properly functioning Primary Care service to exist, we must first address some of the issues that we are seeing in General Practice. Tomorrow we will have the opportunity to engage with the ICGP, IMO and NAGP and hear how they think issues such as the increased service demand due to a rising population, a predominantly hospital-focused healthcare system, the number of GP’s in service and the geographical spread of the service, can be addressed.”

“We are keen to identify positive, workable solutions in this area that can provide an enhanced service to the user. Committee Members look forward to addressing issues such as recruitment and retention, capacity issues at regional and national level, the age profile of existing GPs and how replacements are being put in place, as well the importance of access to proper diagnostics.”

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
