Equity, Fairness and Conservation Measures will be on the agenda of the Committee on the Future Funding of Domestic Water Services when it meets tomorrow, Wednesday, 22 February 2017.

Chairman of the Committee Pádraig Ó Céidigh said: “The report of the Expert Commission said recommended that a much more proactive approach be taken to promoting domestic water conservation measures in Ireland. It also said that Irish Water can play a key role in this regard not only through educational and information campaigns but also through providing advice and access to water conserving devices and that further measures should also be considered, such as a requirement that new domestic buildings incorporate water conserving fittings.

“The expert report said that equity with the proposed arrangements for consumers on public supplies must be maintained for those who are not served by public water supplies. It recommended that this be reviewed when the allowances for consumers on public supplies are determined and that equity for group schemes and private wells be maintained through additional subsidy or other means. It also said that the necessary measures should be put in place to give effect to the commitment that those who have paid their water bills to date will be treated no less favourably than those who have not.

“Tomorrow we will discuss issues of equity, fairness and water conservation in greater detail with representatives of the Public Water Forum.”

The Joint Committee on the Future Funding of Domestic Water Services will meet in Committee Room 4, at 12 noon on Wednesday 22 February 2017. Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
