Seanad Special Select Committee on Brexit to hold inaugural meeting tomorrow

22 March 2017

The Seanad Special Select Committee on the Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union will hold its inaugural meeting tomorrow, Thursday, 23 March at 11am in the Seanad chamber.

The Secretary General of the Department of Justice and Equality, Noel Waters, will address the Committee on the subject of the Common Travel Area.

Committee Chairman, Senator Neale Richmond, said: “The Seanad Special Select Committee is pleased to hold its first meeting in public session tomorrow on an area of vital importance to the Brexit negotiations: the Common Travel Area (CTA). Our first meeting, and indeed all of our subsequent meetings, will focus on potential solutions to the unique challenges posed by the UK departure from the EU. The British government recently committed to guaranteeing the retention of the Common Travel Area without qualification; something that the Irish government supports. There is no doubt that the CTA allows our interlocked business and social relationships in the UK to function efficiently and it is particularly important for those living in border communities.”
