The Oireachtas Committee on the Eight Amendment to the Constitution will meet with Justice Mary Laffoy, Chair of the Citizens’ Assembly tomorrow, Wednesday, 20 September.

Senator Catherine Noone, Chair of the Committee said: “The Citizens’ Assembly is a randomly selected group of 99 members of the public chaired by Justice Mary Laffoy. Broadly representative of the Irish electorate, it had a mandate to look at number of key issues, including an examination of the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution. It published its report on the Eighth Amendment in June. Our Committee was established to consider this report and its recommendations on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution.

“Each of the recommendations of the Citizens' Assembly must now be considered by the Joint Committee as a first step in considering the likely shape of legislation both in this area and on the broader issue of the amendment of the Constitution.

“The Committee begins its public hearings tomorrow when we will meet with Justice Mary Laffoy to discuss the report of the Citizens’ Assembly.

The Committee will meet at 1.30pm, with the public session starting at 2pm, tomorrow, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 in Committee Room 2, Leinster House. Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.
