Health Committee to discuss adult safeguarding

3 Oct 2017, 14:01

The Joint Committee on Health will meet tomorrow at 9.00am in Committee Room 3, Leinster House.

The meeting will focus on issues relating to Adult Safeguarding.

Representatives from the Health Service Executive; Sage (Support and Advocacy Service) and the National Safeguarding Committee will appear before the Committee.

Committee Chair, Dr Michael Harty TD, said, “Our Committee welcomes the chance to examine the complex issues around adult safeguarding tomorrow. There can sometimes be a lack of public understanding as to what constitutes abuse when dealing with vulnerable adults and cases can range from physical and sexual abuse to financial abuse.”

“Our witnesses tomorrow will brief us as to the measures already in place and the need for greater legislative provision to safeguard vulnerable adults from harm. Cultures and attitudes must change if we are to ensure the wellbeing of the most vulnerable groups in our society and the Committee looks forward to an important and productive meeting tomorrow.”
