Transport, Tourism & Sport Committee to meet chairpersons designate

14 Nov 2017, 14:07

The Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport will meet with David McGarry, Chairperson Designate, Shannon Foynes Port Company and Fred Barry, Chairperson Designate, National Transport Authority tomorrow, Wednesday, 15 November 2017.

Committee Chair, Deputy Fergus O’Dowd said: “Those who are being proposed for appointment as chairpersons of State boards are now required to make themselves available to the appropriate Oireachtas Committee.

In the first part of our meeting tomorrow, we will meet with David McGarry, Chairperson Designate, Shannon Foynes Port Company. Shannon Foynes Port Company is Ireland’s second largest port operation providing a variety of services, from controlling navigation and marine safety, to warehousing, logistics and cargo handling. Our meeting tomorrow provides us with an opportunity to discuss with Mr McGarry what he sees are the priorities and challenges for the port in the coming years and, in particular, the 30-year plan to develop port facilities along the Shannon estuary.

In the second part of our meeting, we will engage with Fred Barry, Chairperson Designate of the National Transport Authority, which has responsibility for securing the provision of public passenger land transport services. This includes the provision of subvented bus and rail services by Bus Éireann, Dublin Bus and Irish Rail. The Authority also licences public bus passenger services. Again, we will be keen to hear Mr Barry outline his priorities for the authority in the years ahead. Committee members will also have a chance to raise any issues they may have regarding each company.”

The Committee will meet at 1.30pm, tomorrow, Wednesday, 15 November 2017 in Committee Room 4, Leinster House. Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
