Committee on Mental Health Care to resume discussion of Primary Care, recruitment and funding with community organisations

23 Jan 2018, 09:49

The Joint Committee on the Future of Mental Health Care will meet tomorrow at 1.30pm in Committee Room 4, Leinster House.

Representatives from a number of community healthcare organisations will address the Committee on the issues of primary care, recruitment and funding.

Committee Chairperson, Joan Freeman, said today, “Tomorrow’s meeting is a resumption of our discussion last week. The Committee will be reiterating the fact that many people who need specialist mental health care cannot get their needs met due to a shortage of appropriate support. Significant resources are required in order to ensure speedy access to mental health services. Our witnesses tomorrow will provide the Committee with insight as to how funding and services should be allocated in order to secure better prevention, earlier detection and more immediate care in communities. The nationwide shortage of mental health professionals is unacceptable and measures must be taken in order to increase the mental health workforce, particularly in rural communities.”
