Business Committee focuses on insurance premiums, rising claims in final hearing on cost of doing business in Ireland

4 May 2018, 15:07

The Business, Enterprise and Innovation Committee will conclude its fact-finding into the cost of doing business in Ireland when it hears Tuesday from the insurance industry and an advocate for small international firms.

The committee led by Mary Butler TD has gathered evidence since October on Ireland’s cost competitiveness for companies of every size, from corner shops to multinationals.
At 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 8, in Committee Room 4 of Leinster House, the Committee will meet representatives from:

  • Insurance Ireland, representing Irish-based insurers; and
  • The International Small Business Alliance.

Among the topics being covered are the rising expenses that Irish-based businesses incur from insurance premiums, legal fees, and personal injury judgments imposed by Circuit Courts and the Personal Injuries Assessment Board.
“Over the course of eight hearings, the Committee has gained valuable insight into the rising costs experienced by businesses in Ireland and the often interconnected reasons for these rising costs,” said Deputy Butler. “Pinpointing and reducing these barriers to growth are of national importance. We hope to publish recommendations by July that will lead to root-and-branch improvements in our competitiveness over the long term.”
