Communications, Climate Action & Environment Committee to discuss bin charge pricing

8 May 2018, 11:30

Bin charge pricing will be on the agenda of the Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment at its meeting on Tuesday, 8 May 2018 when it meets with the Chairman of the Household Waste Collection Price Monitoring Unit and officials from the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment

Committee Chair Hildegarde Naughton said: “Under the new arrangements for household waste charges, waste collectors can offer a range of pricing options, such as standing charges; charges per lift or per kilo; charges by weight band; weight allowance charges; or combinations of these charging methods. In addition, bin companies have started to charge for green recycling bins because of the increased costs of recycling. The array of fees and schemes now in operation are very complex for consumers to understand and compare and has led to concerns over charges and collection. On Tuesday the Committee will meet with the Chairman of the Household Waste Collection Price Monitoring Unit and officials from the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment to examine pricing in relation to waste bin charges in greater detail. Removing confusion and providing clarity will not only help people manage their waste costs, but also help people recycle and cut down on unnecessary waste.”

Before it discusses bin charge pricing, the Committee will carry out:

•    Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals: Schedule A: COM(2018)144 on Persistent Organic Pollutants (recast);
•    Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals: Schedule B: COM(2016)285 Cross-border parcel delivery services; and COM(2017)495 Free flow on non-personal data in the EU

This meeting will start at 3pm on Tuesday, 8 May 2018 in Committee Room 2, Leinster House. You can watch proceedings here.
