Education Committee continues review of relationships and sexuality education

14 May 2018, 11:24

The Joint Committee on Education and Skills will continue its hearings on relationships and sexuality education at its meeting on Tuesday 15 May at 3.30pm in Committee Room 2, Leinster House.

Appearing before the Committee are:

Ms. Anna Keogh, Academic
Representatives from Inclusion Ireland
Representatives from CyberSafe Ireland
Representatives from National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI)
Representatives from BeLonG To
Representatives from School of Psychology, National University of Ireland Galway (NUIG)

Committee Chair, Fiona O’Loughlin TD, said today, “As part of its Work Programme, the Committee agreed to undertake a review of sexual health and relationship education and matters relating to the areas of contraception and consent, in primary and post-primary schools, colleges, youth clubs and other organisations involved in education and interactions with young people. We recently sought written submissions from interested groups or individuals in relation to this matter and on Tuesday we will resume our hearings on the review.

It is clear that that this element of the current curriculum is out of date and in many areas, no longer reflective of society today. Therefore it is important that we hear from organisations and individuals working and interacting with young people to get their views and perspectives on what measures should be put in place to ensure that they are properly equipped to teach young people about wellbeing, identity and respectful sexual behaviours. It is also important that young people are able to access information that is relevant to them and that takes their unique needs into consideration.”

This meeting will start at 3.30pm on Tuesday, 15 May 2018 in Committee Room 2, Leinster House. You can watch proceedings here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
