Chair of the Joint Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment Hildegarde Naughton TD said: “Climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing our planet and it is important that we all play our part in helping to reduce the harmful emissions that are damaging our planet and environment and driving climate change. Ireland’s first National Mitigation Plan which was published last year sets out the first steps for transitioning Ireland to a low carbon, climate resilient and environmentally sustainable economy by 2050. At our meeting on Wednesday, we will hear from a number of stakeholders to get their perspectives on the plan and on Ireland’s efforts to decarbonise our society and meet our climate action targets.

In the second part of our meeting we will hear from the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment and the Environmental Protection Agency in relation to the Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant which is currently under construction in the south west coast of the UK, around 240 kilometres from Ireland. A number of Irish environmental organisations have raised concerns about the implications the power plant could have for Ireland. We will be keen to discuss these concerns and get an update on developments at Hinkley Point C Power Plant at our meeting tomorrow.”
