Queen’s University academics to discuss Brexit risks with Good Friday Committee

15 May 2018, 18:18

The Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement will discuss the potential risks posed by Brexit with two academics from Queen’s University Belfast at its meeting Thursday.

Political scientist David Phinnemore and sociologist Katy Hayward are scheduled to begin their presentation at 2:15 p.m. in Committee Room 4, Leinster House.

Both witnesses have written extensively on how joint European Union membership provided essential context for the 1998 agreement and how Brexit could undermine key planks of that landmark accord.

Thursday’s speakers:

  • David Phinnemore is Professor of European Politics and Dean of Education at Queen’s and a visiting professor at the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium.
  • Katy Hayward is Reader in Sociology at Queen’s. Her research interests include European integration, cross-border conflict and cooperation, the dynamics of peacemaking, and Brexit’s likely impact on Ireland.

“All Committee members are concerned by the potential for Brexit to destabilise the achievements of the Good Friday Agreement,” said Committee Chairman Seán Crowe TD. “Thursday’s witnesses bring a wealth of fresh research experience to bear on the topic and we look forward to discussing their analysis of the situation.”
