Culture, Heritage & Gaeltacht Committee to focus on music in Ireland

Music in Ireland today will be on the agenda of the Committee on Culture, Heritage & Gaeltacht at its meeting on Wednesday, 23 May 2018.

Appearing before the Committee are:

Representatives from Dublin Institute of Technology - Conservatory of Music and Drama    
Representatives from Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann    
Representatives from Sing out with Strings - Irish Chamber Orchestra    
Representatives from Music Generation  

Cathaoirleach of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Peadar Tóibín TD said: “Ireland has a rich and vibrant music heritage from traditional Irish music to classical to modern rock and pop. Music in all its forms plays an important role in our society and can have an uplifting effect on people’s lives, whether it is through listening or participation. Therefore it is vital that music is accessible to all and that music education is available to all. On Wednesday we will hear from a wide range of organisations involved in music and music education in lreland, including DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama, a centre of excellence for education in the performing arts;  Music Generation, Ireland’s national music education programme; Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, which is involved in the preservation and promotion of Irish traditional music ; and the Irish Chamber Orchestra’s Sing out with Strings,which provides weekly workshops in singing, song-writing, violin, viola, cello and double bass tuition for 300 children across Limerick city. We are looking forward to an enlightening, wide-ranging and productive engagement.”
