Housing Committee to examine how local authorities’ waiting lists operate

22 May 2018, 17:46

The Joint Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government on Wednesday will explore how local authorities manage their waiting lists for housing.

Witnesses scheduled to speak starting at 9:30 a.m. in Committee Room 1, Leinster House, include:

  • Assistant Secretary Mary Hurley of the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government;
  • Officials from the Irish housing support charity Threshold; and
  • Representatives of the County and City Management Association. Their delegation includes Carlow County Council Chief Executive Kathleen Holohan, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council Housing Director Catherine Keenan, and Kilkenny County Council Services Director Mary Mulholland.

The Committee led by Maria Bailey TD is seeking a clearer picture of how Ireland’s 31 local authorities organise and manage their housing waiting lists.

“Tens of thousands of households are currently on waiting lists to move into more appropriate accommodation,” said Deputy Bailey. “It is important, given the scale of the need, for county and city councils to determine eligibility and prioritise applicants in a transparent manner. The Committee is looking forward to learning more about how the system operates and how it might be improved.”
