Irish Language Committee continues hearings on the use of Irish on radio

28 May 2018, 14:02

The use of Irish on radio will be back on the agenda of the Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands at its meeting on Tuesday, 29 May 2018 when it meets with representatives from the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland.

Chairperson of the Committee Catherine Connolly TD said: “Last month we met with Dr John Walsh of NUI Galway and Dr Rosemary Day of the University of Limerick to discuss a report entitled 'Discussion paper on Irish language radio broadcasting' which Dr Walsh and Dr Day have recently published.”

“That report found that the Irish language has only a marginal role on the vast majority of Irish radio stations, despite a legal obligation to include it. On Tuesday we will get the perspectives of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland on the issue.”

“Radio remains a very important means of communication and it is essential that a vibrant, accessible and sustainable radio service is provided to Irish language listeners. Therefore we’re looking forward to our meeting with the BAI to discuss the challenges and opportunities of providing Irish language radio services.”

This meeting will take place at 4pm on Tuesday, 29 May 2018 in Committee Room 4, Leinster House.
