Good Friday Committee to focus on impact of Brexit on the Agreement

13 Jun 2018, 17:21

The Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement will tomorrow examine the impact of Brexit on the Good Friday Agreement, and outstanding issues in relation to the Agreement itself.

Dr Jonny Byrne from Ulster University, will address the Committee when it meet at 2.15pm in Committee Room 4, Leinster House

Speaking in advance of the meeting, Committee Chair, Seán Crowe TD said, “Twenty years on from the historic signing of the Good Friday Agreement, concerns about the impact Brexit will have on its future continue to be raised. It is important that the Committee continues to explore the ramifications of Brexit on the Good Friday Agreement. Dr Jonny Byrne has particular expertise in the areas of security and paramilitarism and we look forward to hearing his views on how Brexit may impact on these areas, among others. Since 1998, the implementation of the Agreement has taken place in the context of shared membership of the European Union. The depoliticisation of the border must not be disrupted by Brexit and tomorrow, we hope to learn more about the parts of the Agreement still to be implemented and how Brexit is likely to impact on the Agreement as a whole.”
