Committee on Future of Mental Health Care to discuss deficiencies in services with Children’s Ombudsman

19 Jun 2018, 14:42

The Committee on the Future of Mental Health Care will tomorrow meet with Dr Niall Muldoon, Ombudsman for Children.

Committee Chairperson, Joan Freeman, said today, “At our meeting tomorrow, Dr Muldoon will present the Committee with his report entitled, “Take My Hand”: Young People’s Experiences of Mental Health Services. This report is informed by direct engagement with young people utilising mental health services around the country and details a range of challenges that they have experienced, both as mental health services users and more generally.”

“The fact that Dr John Hillery, the President of the College of Psychiatrists, said he felt he had to resign from the HSE due to the executive’s inaction over mental health issues is a matter of great concern. Lack of funding and services impacts on all mental health services, but young people are often particularly vulnerable and more must be done to provide the supports they need. The Committee welcomes the opportunity to consult with the Ombudsman on his report, but also on the complaints, investigations and policy work conducted by his office on the area of mental health services for young people.”

The meeting will start at 1.30pm in Committee Room 3, Leinster House.
