Foreign Affairs Committee to discuss latest Christian Aid Tax Report

Report finds that Irish tax policies negatively impact on developing countries

The Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs, Trade and Defence will meet tomorrow to discuss the recent Christian Aid Tax Report

  • Motion on 100th year anniversary of the declaration of Independence of the Democratic Republic of Georgia
  • Meeting with representatives of Christian Aid – to discuss the recent Christian Aid Ireland Tax Report. Representatives from Christian Aid Ireland, Mr Sorley McCaughey and Dr Sheila Killian
  • Meeting with Mr. Fernando Gonzáles M.P. - Cuban Parliament– to discuss the current political situation in Cuba. Mr Fernando Gonzáles M.P.

Committee Chair, Brendan Smith TD, said today, “Christian Aid’s report, ‘Not Without Cost’, examines the impact of Ireland’s tax code on developing countries and concludes that Irish tax laws have a significant impact on developing economies. Tomorrow, the Committee will engage with Christian Aid to discuss why they believe that Irish tax policies are undermining the tax take of some of the poorest countries in the world.”

“We will also meet with the Deputy to the National Assembly of the People's Power of the Republic of Cuba, Mr. Fernando González Llort, to receive an update on the political situation in Cuba. Topics likely to be discussed include the opportunities offered by the bilateral agreement signed during the visit of President Michael Higgins to Cuba in February 2017, as well as the measures currently being progressed by the Cuban Government for the growth of the Cuban economy.”
